Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
October 9, 2022

Today in worship, we are going to focus our attention on the fifth and final Core Value at Cypress Creek Christian Church: Worship. There is no way I could fully explain the concept of worship in a single sermon, and this morning, I won’t even try. There are many wonderful and positive ways of thinking about worship, but I believe there are a few less than healthy ways as well. One in particular that I hear often implies that God needs our worship. To suggest that God “needs” our worship is to say that God is incomplete without us. Or to say it another way, God cannot be God without us. For me, that is deeply troubling. We, as human beings, need certain things to be happy and healthy, and I believe God is one of those things we need. But God does not need us. With that said, God has chosen to be in relationship with us because God is love, and love seeks the best for others. In the end, God will be able to be God even if we do not worship and love God. If you think about it, that’s some really good news. I don’t know if I’d be very comfortable if God felt insecure and dejected because we did not do something. That’s a human attribute we impose upon God. I need God to be God, and not just a slightly better version of Bruce.

As you continue to be who you are, O God, I pray that your love will guide me to being the best version of me that I can be. Amen.
