Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Proverbs 21:21
Those who pursue righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.

Thought for the Day: What does it mean to pursue righteousness and kindness? In a world where religion has become scary competitive and arrogantly destructive, we need to dial it down a bit and demonstrates right-living and kindness toward those who have a different opinion. I recently heard someone say, “I am Christian by geography.” It is true that had I been born in a different place or country I might be a Buddhist Monk or Islamic Imam or maybe an atheist. Cultural influences are powerful, and with that in mind, I feel that right-living and kindness require me to be more than just tolerant of others whose faith is not Christian. I need to show respect and listen so that I do not pass along stereotypes that have no basis in reality. And could it be that I might learn something or even grow in my faith because of someone from another faith tradition? I hope so.

Tonight is the Spring Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This will be the sixth one I have attended since coming to Texas, and though each one has been different, I have enjoyed the time of joyous gratitude in the diverse community of people who gather. I hope you might consider joining me tonight at Northwoods Presbyterian Church (7pm).

Prayer: When a person of faith shows love for the neighbor, even when his/her faith is different than mine, I must show respect as you, O Lord, have placed love as the highest ideal. Let me be less concerned about the how and more appreciative of the what…when the what is love. Amen,
