Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 6:2-4
Whenever you give to the poor, don’t blow your trumpet as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may get praise from people. I assure you, that’s the only reward they’ll get. But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that you may give to the poor in secret. Your Father who sees what you do in secret will reward you.

Thought for the Day: My right hand and left hand rarely talk. There are days when my clumsiness make it appear as if they don’t even like each other. Now I don’t believe that’s exactly what Jesus was suggesting. He seems to be wanting within his followers an unconscious response to the needs of others. So ingrained within us are gifts such as, love, compassion, kindness and gentleness, that we do not need to ask the question, What do I do? There is no need to draw attention to ourselves by asking others, What should I do? We just do without any personal praise or the seeking of recognition. This does not come natural to most people, so we continue to make room for God and God’s gifts to dwell within us and to become truly a part of who we are.

Prayer: May my life continue to find new ways of being a gift to others, a gift through which you, O Gracious Giver of Life, demonstrate compassion and kindness to others. Amen.
