Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Peter 4:8
Above all, show sincere love to each other, because love brings about the forgiveness of many sins.

Thought for the Day: I’m preaching on 1st Peter 4 this morning. I was curious in regard to the phrase, “sincere love,” as I don’t believe there is insincere love. If it is insincere, it is not love. Period! It might pretend to be, but it’s not. The word being translated as sincere is the word to stretch. That makes more sense to me than sincere. The love of Jesus was always stretching far beyond what anyone had previously imagined. If you are blessed by the knowledge of God’s unconditional love, then you know what it means to be touched by a love that is capable of stretching. The question this puts before us is important: How far am I willing to allow my love to stretch? There is good news for all those who don’t believe that love can reach them. The Good News is this: The love of God revealed in Jesus has no breaking point. It’s elasticity is eternal. Its reach is beyond measure.

Prayer: I fear nothing, O Gracious God, as you have demonstrated the flexibility and resilience of your love. It reached me, and I believe it has already stretched to those whom the world has dismissed and tossed away. Make sure my life does not in any way give the impression that your love is limited. That would possibly be the greatest sin I could commit. Amen.

SEE YOU THIS MORNING
