Scripture: Mark 12:7-8
But those tenant farmers said to each other, “This is the heir. Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.” They grabbed him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
Thought for the Day: This is the continuation of the parable that was referenced in yesterday’s devotional. The Landowner sent back three servants to collect his share of the money yearned from the vineyard, but those who had been entrusted with its care, beat the first two servants and killed the third. Finally the Landowner decided to send his son (this analogy to Jesus should be pretty clear), yet those entrusted with the vineyard showed no mercy or respect. In fact, they not only killed him, but they threw his body out of the vineyard. To be tossed from the vineyard (outside of God’s beloved community as we talked about yesterday) is symbolic of how Jesus was viewed by those who would reject him. Yet it was from the tomb, from that place of utter hopelessness, that Jesus would rise and change the world. I must believe that this is not a once and only event, but the way God works in the world. It does not matter how much the power of love is despised or rejected, it will always rise in the work of redemption.
Prayer: Give me reason to believe this day! Give me reason to believe, O God of Rebirth and Renewal. Give me reason to believe, and from that belief, I shall see you in the work of redemption. Amen.
