Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
November 5, 2022

I read some words of scripture in the hotel a few nights ago that have continued to speak and dance in my head and heart. In Proverbs 3:27-28, we read:

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you.”

Scripture has a funny way of getting under your skin before you even know it. I’ll be interested to see just how embedded this passage gets in the weeks ahead, and there is a bit of cautious hope that I’ll be able to take it on a test run at some point. It may not be a neighbor, but I’m pretty certain an opportunity to give to another will arise. Will I find an excuse – even a really good excuse – to put off the giving even though I have the ability to do so? Just how firmly fixed is the truth of this passage within me? Is it just under my skin, but not something really dwelling in my heart and soul?

Maker of Life and Love, firmly lodge the essences of your Living Word within me. Without it residing deeply in my soul, I will only acknowledge it without ever allowing it to change me. Amen.
