Scripture: Philippians 1:27-28
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
Thought for the Day: As you’ve heard me say often in worship, “Cypress Creek Christian Church is a community striving to put love first in all things.” I use the word strive as it is a scriptural word. The actual Greek word we translate as striving in this passage from Philippians is Sunathleo. It is two words: together and persist/endure. The second word is athleo, and it was a word often used in Ancient Greek and Roman competitions. It gives the sense of suffering toward some goal, and as we know, elite athletes must demand a lot of themselves if they desire to be at the top of their game. Such training isn’t just for athletes, but also the followers of Jesus who have as their goal a life worthy of the Gospel – without fear of those who might oppose this life. Let us not pretend that we can live the life of faith without training and discipline. The last thing God needs are those who claim to be followers, but conduct themselves in a way that is unworthy of the Gospel.
Prayer: O Giver of the One Spirit, remind me often to strive and stretch and push myself for the purpose of your Gospel, a Gospel of unconditional love. Amen.
