ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHING
November 27, 2021
People who immerse themselves in the Christian story, participating in the yearly cycle beginning with Advent, are shaped dramatically in the Jesus life. People can convince themselves that they know the Jesus life, but so often it is more like the knowledge most of us had of 9th grade chemistry. We sort of memorized what we could of the Periodic Table and shuffled enough other information into our short term memory in hopes of squeaking out a B on the test. That is not experiencing chemistry. A real chemist has immersed her/himself fully in the chemistry story, with all of its unique and unexpected findings. During Advent, we will not only hear the Prophets who spoke of a desperate longing for God, but worship will invite us into a place where the ancient story and our story overlap. We will journey with different characters as they find themselves thrust onto the stage of divine action and revelation. We will eventually join the shepherds and hear an angelic choir, and then walk with them to Bethlehem and the place of the child’s birth. You can always read the story, but it is much more impactful to immerse yourself in the story… assuming you are seeking to be changed.
O God of Every Holy Advent, we prepare ourselves to be swept up and brought into the magnificent story of your love taking on flesh. Encourage us to feel the emotion of the story; the questions and concerns of the characters; the longing and hopefulness of those whom society had long written off. We want to have more than an intellectual knowledge of the Christmas event. We want to experience the fullness of what it means for us to claim your love being born into the world. Amen.
