Scripture: John 1:4-5
…in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
Thought for the Day: It was on this day in 1247 that the Netherlands experienced a flood that killed between 50,000 – 80,000 people. That number is difficult to fathom. It came the day after the Feast of Santa Lucia (St. Lucy), a festival of light celebrated in Scandinavian countries. Too often we find ourselves celebrating the light with no sense of the pending darkness. Do we allow for the possibility of tomorrow’s tragedy to upend our celebrations today? Anxiety can do this, but it is not healthy. Not only do we need to celebrate the light for the gift it is, but in our celebrating, we are allowing that light to be etched upon our minds and spirits. So when the darkness comes the following day, or a month later, or five years down the road, we are better able to make our way through the darkness.
Prayer: You, O Lord of Life, are the light of all people. Shine upon me the warmth of your light, a light that no darkness can extinguish. Amen.
