ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

Rev. Bob Hill, a colleague from years ago, wrote the words, “Love is the ultimate spiritual currency for those who follow in the ways of the Nazarene carpenter.” I came across those words recently and have allowed them to tease my theological imagination: Love, Spiritual, Currency and Jesus. The love we share is the currency we use, not to acquire more physical possessions, but to invest in healing, hope, and the work of justice. Love has an amazing power in the economy of human relationships, yet its value is not based on the gold standard. Instead, its value is found in a child born among the livestock, whose spiritual stock remains priceless in spite how many my judge the situation. In 1 John 3, we read how we are to believe in the name of Jesus and love one another, just as we were commanded to do so. When we read the word “believe,” I’m pretty sure we need to think of it as aligning ourselves with or connecting ourselves to Jesus. Only then will our love be as impactful and transformative.

Where your love is freely given away, O God of all creation, its value only increases as more and more people desire it. May there eventually be a run on your love, with each person discovering that it remains plentiful as they get their fill. Amen.
