Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
December 29, 2022

As we approach 2023, who do you need to forgive? Before answering, let’s review the basic guidelines of forgiveness. First, forgiving someone in no way suggests the injury caused was justified or even okay. You can forgive someone and still say what was done was wrong. That’s usually the case. Second, forgiveness does not automatically make you feel better or all warm inside. It can be frustrating and emotionally draining, though holding onto a grudge can also be frustrating and emotionally draining. Third, forgiving someone might have absolutely nothing to do with the one being forgiven. In fact, forgiving is first and foremost about refusing to let the injury or the person who caused it to define your future. Yes, offering forgiveness to someone might be the greatest gift you could give, but it might be even more powerful for you. If you need some help, don’t hesitate to reach out to someone who might be able to help.

As hard as it might be and as unfair as it might appear, I come seeking your help, Gracious God. I do not wish to carry the heavy burden of unforgiveness any longer. I yearn to be free, so be my guide. Amen.
