ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHING
November 23, 2021
For most pastors, we pause momentarily for Thanksgiving with most of our energy focused on Advent. I sort of like Thanksgiving, and it’s not just because I am granted permission to make a lot of sweet potatoes and a real good dessert I can eat. Thanksgiving has looked different almost every year in the last twenty years, but there has always been good food and lots of laughter. While a lot of my thoughts are looking past Thanksgiving, I tend to be a thankful person. I probably don’t say thank you enough, but there is a part of me clinging tightly to the words of 1st Thessalonians, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks in all circumstances…” As I get older, I find myself with more gratitude in my heart on a more consistent basis. Pausing with wonderment is more common than it was when I was younger. Even though there is a bit of cynicism within me, I am more easily WOWed by the joyful surprises of life. And as I fall asleep most night, the list of people for whom I am grateful often stretches well into my dreams.
In the marvelous chaos of this week, O God, there is much that really needs my grateful awareness. Tap me on the shoulder, whisper in my ear or do whatever is necessary to bring me fully into the moment with a spirit of appreciation. Amen.
