Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
July 15, 2022

In the Sermon on the Mount (a portion of it found in Matthew 6), Jesus said, “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” I have a love/hate relationship with those words. I so want to live into them, yet I do such an amazing job of not doing so. I am reminded of Helen Keller, who once wrote, “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” We can so easily be overwhelmed with worry in regard to what needs to happen in the days and weeks to come that we become incapable of doing even one thing today. There are troubles today, and most of them cannot be solved by one of us alone. Yet the absence of one person might just be the reason the problem continues into tomorrow and next week. If I am stuck in my worries, I might end up being the person who is not there when I’m needed.

You have gifted me, O God, with spiritual tools that work well with the spiritual tools of others in bringing about real change. Thank you! Amen.
