Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
October 27, 2026
This coming Sunday is one of the more meaningful and painful Sundays of the year. It is All Saints’ Sunday, and in our worship services, it includes a time in which we name those who have died over the last year. For many, just hearing a name spoken in worship can be emotionally triggering, and at the same time, emotionally healing. Grief doesn’t have a set schedule or correct process, and suggesting All Saints’ Sunday will be helpful for everyone would be a mistake. And over the years, I’ve known people who could not be in worship because the hurt was too raw, but they were thrilled to know their family member’s name was being spoken. Ritual is so very important for us, and not just religious people. Ritual can be comforting, providing both peace and hope. Wherever you are in a journey of grief, please know there are people who want to pray for you and with you, if that would be helpful. Please know that there are people who would be more than happy to listen, not with the intention of solving anything, but simply to create a space where you can express the significance of your story and your experiences. Please know you are loved!

For the hard, necessary, and good work of grief, we turn to you with gratitude as you are the One, Gracious God, who is patient and kind along the journey. Your love is our strength and guide. Amen.
