Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you lazybones; consider its ways, and be wise. Without having any chief or officer or ruler, it prepares its food in summer, and gathers its sustenance in harvest.

Thought for the Day: On this day, I hope that no one reading my devotional sees April 15 and says, “Oh my gosh, I haven’t started my taxes.” If that is you, I give you permission to read nothing more of this devotional. For the rest of you, I want to talk about procrastination. Procrastination is a dear friend of mine. I am an odd procrastinator. I start early, get the basics done, and then set it aside. As the deadline approaches, I reopen it and discover that it wasn’t as far along as I had remembered. You’d think I’d learn after a while, but so far, I continue to be surprised.

In our spiritual walks, let us continue to push ahead. Part of the problem is found in how the life of faith has no real deadline. Some people will suggest that death is the deadline, but unless you have just received a startling diagnosis, it really isn’t a motivating factor. Instead, our incentive should have less to do with some nebulous deadline and more to do with the yearning within us – the yearning to know – the yearning to know God, self and purpose.

Prayer: I really don’t want to be known as the lazybones of Christianity, so light a fire under me, O Lord of the Encouraging Flame. Continue to keep me searching and growing, finding challenge and even discomfort. Above all, I desire to know you, know myself and know the calling you are putting before me. Amen.
