Scripture: Romans 12:9-11
Love should be shown without pretending. Hate evil, and hold on to what is good. Love each other like the members of your family. Be the best at showing honor to each other. Don’t hesitate to be enthusiastic—be on fire in the Spirit as you serve the Lord!
Thought for the Day: The Trappist Monk and Mystic, Thomas Merton wrote:
Our job is to love others
without stopping to inquire
whether or not they are worthy.
That is not our business and, in fact,
it is nobody’s business.
What we are asked to do is to love,
and this love itself will render
both ourselves and our neighbors
worthy if anything can.
If you are to think about what Merton is suggesting, the invitation he makes is really rather simple. There are no complicated formulas or rules. Yet simplicity does not necessarily mean uncomplicated. In this case, the simple vision of loving others becomes complicated as it is applied to our daily lives that are shaped by fears, misinformation, unhealthy experiences, injuries that have made us more rigid, etc. What is one thing you can do today that will lead you a bit closer to this simple life of love?
Prayer: You chose to put love first for a reason, O God of All Creation. You loved us without stopping to inquire whether or not we were worthy. You simply loved us. And for this gift, we are not only thankful but challenged to do the same. Help us we pray! Amen.
