Scripture: Jeremiah 2:13
My people have committed two crimes: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water. And they have dug wells, broken wells that can’t hold water.
Thought for the Day: The poetry of this verse is really quite stunning. It uses the metaphor of living water (in Hebrew – it is the same as flowing water, thus not stagnant). Though it is interesting how the people have turned away from the living water, and not only have they attempted to dig their own wells, they failed to dig wells that actually provide water. The love of God is life-giving – like that of a flowing stream, yet too often we seek this sustenance in places and things that are not life-giving at all. We dig deep into them thinking that eventually we will come upon that which will quench the thirsting of our souls, but in the end, these wells are empty. Where in your life are their self-dug wells that have failed you?
Prayer: Lead me, O Source of Life, to the place where I can drink from your living water. Help me to turn away from the wells that are dry so that my full attention can be upon you. Amen.
