Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Deuteronomy 18:18
I’ll raise up a prophet for them from among their fellow Israelites—one just like you. I’ll put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

Thought for the Day: In my noon study yesterday, I mentioned the author and scholar, Abraham Joshua Heschel. I read a few of his books in College and Seminary, including his well respected two volumes on the Prophets. As I conclude these few weeks on the Prophet Jeremiah, I have decided to leave you with some ideas from Heschel. Much of what he wrote gets at the heart of the prophets, including Jeremiah.

God is of no importance unless God is of supreme importance.

It is not enough for me to ask a question; I want to know how to answer the one question that seems to encompass everything I face: What am I here for?

God is not a hypothesis derived from logical assumptions, but an immediate insight, self-evident as light. He is not something to be sought in the darkness with the light of reason. God is the light.

A test of a people is how it behaves toward the old. It is easy to love children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care of the old, the incurable, the helpless are the true gold minds of a culture.

Allow for these words to dance with your spirit today.

Prayer: Continue to raise up voices, O Might God, who will speak words of wisdom, critique and hope to our hearts. We need your voice! We need you! Amen.
