Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Daniel 3:1
King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden statue whose height was sixty cubits and whose width was six cubits; he set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

Thought for the Day: Just a few verses ago, King Nebuchadnezzar had this marvelous transformation where he turned toward the Lord God. You’d think there was no going back, but then we arrive at chapter 3 – and all of a sudden – the King is back to his old ways. In fact, every chapter in the first half of the book begins this cycle anew. This cycle is a technique the author uses to tell his story, but it is also the human cycle. Maybe the cyclical aspect of the story is a bit exaggerated, but it makes an important point. One day we think we’ve got it all figured out, and the next we feel as if we haven’t made it to the starting line. The good news is that God continues to send patient messengers like Daniel who reintroduce us to transformative grace…again and again.

Prayer: With this new day, O Lord, both my life and the world in which I live are in need of some transformation. Amen.
