Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 1:46-49
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name…”

Thought for the Day: Mary makes an astonishing realization about her God. The favor of God has been extended upon a lowly handmaiden. In a time when the Roman gods were seen as wielded power over humanity, this news would have been a bit shocking. Mary makes an extraordinary statement when she speaks of a God who cares for someone like herself – someone the culture would have dismissed. Yet it goes further than that. This God not only recognizes her, but invites her to participate in God’s redemptive work. This was not only glorious news for Mary, but continues to be glorious news for all of us who have those moments when we question our worthiness before God.

Prayer: Lord, attune my spirit to your presence. Help me to choose the Joy that comes from your eternal and loving presence. Amen.
