Scripture: Ephesians 5:1-2
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Thought for the Day: Let us first remember that an offering within Judaism was not an offering to appease or placate an angry god, but a gift of reconciliation. Christ’s death was this symbol of reconciliation, a visible expression of God’s ability to find a way to mend a relationship that appeared to be beyond repair. We are called to be imitators of this God. And as imitators, we are not seeking a blood sacrifice in order to forgive, but following the One who fully gives the divine self away as a pathway of reconciliation and healing. I think most of us prefer being on the receiving end of the gift, and would rather ignore the next step. But there is a responsibility for those who have joyfully claimed this gift of God in Christ – so go and be imitators.
Prayer: The example you set, Most Gracious Father, is quite clear. We see in Christ both the gift of and the pathway toward reconciliation. Lead us toward a life that displays the generosity of your love. Amen.
