Scripture: Mark 15:46
Joseph of Arimathea bought a linen cloth, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the cloth, and laid him in a tomb that had been carved out of rock. He rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
Thought for the Day: Where would you have been that night? I think it is the hope of every human being to be on the right side of history, but it is hard to say where we would have stood. I remember finding an obituary from one of my relatives in the early 1800’s. Included among the biographical information was how his assets were to be distributed, including who would get his slaves. For the longest time, I had hoped my family had been on the right side of history when it came to slavery. Reading the stories of the great abolitionist, there was always wishful thinking that I’d come across the name of a relative. At the end of the day, I know I cannot be responsible for the decisions of those who came before me, but in light of what I have learned, I feel more obligated to find ways of setting things right; of trying to determine where the right side of history is before that history is written; of being confessional when I recognize my own failures. I would like to think I would have been there with Joseph of Arimathea to make the risky request of Pilate for the body of Jesus, but I have to admit that I might have been with Peter who was in full denial of his relationship with Jesus.
Prayer: The wrongs of the past often need justice today, but whatever the case, help me – O Gracious Spirit – to learn and grow in my understanding of faithfulness and righteousness even when it demands a lot of me. Amen.
