Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 13:1-2
As Jesus left the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look! What awesome stones and buildings!” Jesus responded, “Do you see these enormous buildings? Not even one stone will be left upon another. All will be demolished.”

Thought for the Day: On this day in 70AD, the Romans broke through the wall of Jerusalem during a siege to reclaim the city that had been lost during the Jewish revolt a few years earlier. In the sacking of the city that followed, the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. As the Gospel writer of Mark tells of Jesus sitting in the shadow of the Temple some 40 years earlier, it appears as if Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple. Most scholars believe that Mark (the first Gospel) was written as a response to this destruction and what the disappearance of the Temple meant for the followers of Jesus. A lot of Jesus followers would have still looked to the Temple in Jerusalem as the centerpiece of faith, but this pivotal moment required a pivot. To include Jesus seeing a faith beyond brick and mortar had to have been important for Mark’s community. I’m not suggesting a destruction of our buildings, but how might God be calling us beyond our walls? How does brick and mortar limit us as followers of Jesus Christ?

Prayer: Thank you for the amazing buildings that are used to do ministry, O Lord, but keep before us an imaginative and spirit-filled vision that sees your calling well beyond the boundaries of our property. This we pray in the name of the one whose ministry was done along the roadside. Amen.
