Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 9:8
God has the power to provide you with more than enough of every kind of grace. That way, you will have everything you need always and in everything to provide more than enough for every kind of good work.

Thought for the Day: According to Paul, God has provided more than enough so that we have enough to provide more than enough for the good work to which we have been called. Notice how I used the word we in my description of what Paul is saying. I use the plural pronoun because Paul used the plural pronoun. As I have shared many times, the Greek language allows for the reader to know whether the you used in a sentence is singular or plural. In this case, it is plural. Paul was writing to the community as a whole, and he believed that collectively there was more than enough to achieve the task God was putting before them. God provides, but so often God provides in and through the community as a whole. First of all, rarely does one person bring to a task everything that is needed for the task. Equally important, there is something that happens when community acts together. As Paul suggested, there is more than enough given to us so that there is more than enough when we give of what God has given…assuming we do it together.

Prayer: Provide for us, O Merciful God, the insight to work together and to share our gifts freely. Allow your Spirit to animate this body called the church for the good work put before us. Amen.
