Scripture: Psalm 130:1-2
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
Thought for the Day: Where does prayer begin? So often people cry out amidst pain or anguish – an emotional longing spoken to the universe. Though the above Psalm is directed to the Lord, there are many who cry out with no specific individual in mind. There is simply something deep within us that hopes there are attentive ears, especially when despair or hopelessness grips us. The author of the Psalm suggests these emotional cries come “out of the depths” of one’s life. Some might believe this deep place within us is simply where our emotions reside, but I see it more as the place that knows – consciously or unconsciously – the One whose image resides within us. It is like the cry of an infant left alone. Though the infant has no verbal way of articulating the need for a loving presence, the infant still knows what it longs to experience. There is a part of each of us that knows what it longs to experience, especially in times of pain or anguish.
Prayer: I trust that your ears are attentive to my cry, O Lord of the Universe. In times of darkness, there is still something within me that believes you are there. Amen.
