Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Peter 3:17-18
Therefore, dear friends, since you have been warned in advance, be on guard so that you aren’t led off course into the error of sinful people, and lose your own safe position. Instead, grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him belongs glory now and forever. Amen.

Thought for the Day: In 2nd Peter, there is a concern about being pulled into the ways of the world. There are so many distractions and enticing forces that seek to pull us from our “safe position” and toward something other than God. The closing line provides a suggestion of how to deal with this tug, but it is not all that specific. The encouragement is for us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus, but there is not much in regard to how that growth occurs. For many followers of Jesus, there is a commitment to the idea of growth, but no intentional plans for how to grow. Many people commit to running a marathon, but very few of them put together an intentional plan that will get them to the finish line. Equally important, this growth is not for a short period of time. Growth should be our life-long passion. A stagnant relationship with God is a relationship that is moving backwards as life is always moving forward. Some growth is required just to keep pace, and I don’t believe most of us are looking for a faith that just keeps pace with the normal forward movement of life.

Prayer: Keep me growing and exploring and stretching in my relationship with you, O Living and Loving God. Amen.
