Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 42:1-2
Just like a deer that craves streams of water, my whole being craves you, God. My whole being thirsts for God, for the living God. When will I come and see God’s face?

Thought for the Day: It is Saturday, and many of us are getting a few tasks done around the house or in the yard. Maybe there are some plans for dinner with a friend later today; maybe there is the hope of catching a short nap this afternoon; maybe you plan to spend a few quality minutes preparing for worship tomorrow. Sadly, not too many of us are thinking about preparing for worship. The author of the Psalm is speaking to a longing (craving, thirsting) within the human soul, a longing that finds fulfillment in a living relationship with God. For those of you who are planning on doing some tasks around the house or yard today, there might be some necessary preparation. There might be a trip to the store for some cleaning equipment or to Lowe’s for some fertilizer; there might be the need to put on bug spray and sunscreen; there might be the need to make sure everyone is together on the meeting time for dinner. We prepare, in small and big ways, for so much of life. Yet do we give worship and our relationship with God the same attention…not in the moment of worship, but in the hours and days before worship?

Prayer: When will I come and see your face, O God? When will I meet you anew in a time of prayer and praise? Let me make myself ready, so that the hunger within me is named and the fulfillment of that hunger is also named. I offer my prayer this day in preparation for meeting you tomorrow. Amen.
