Scripture: Psalm 68:4-6
Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds — his name is the Lord— be exultant before him. Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. God gives the desolate a home to live in; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious live in a parched land.
Thought for the Day: I noticed! His actions were noticed and appreciated. Yesterday, I took my mothers to the airport to catch her flight back to Nebraska. We said good-bye at the entrance of the TSA line, but Donna and I stayed around to watch her go through all the checks. We were able to do so from behind the glass. Now my mom is very active, especially for someone her age (sorry, mom… that’s probably not a good thing to say), but when she got to the point where she had to get everything on the conveyor-belt for the x-ray machine, she had a lot to maneuver. She was trying to take off her shoes and her coat, plus get her drivers license back in her purse. Through it all there was a young man behind her who showed great patience and kindness, helping her at every point. I noticed everything he did, and I was so thankful. The Prophets and the Psalmists spoke often of God showing special care for the orphans and widows, but that God also invited the faithful to do the same. Yesterday, I saw a young man who made God very happy. In a world where young people are often viewed by the poor choices of a few, it was a good reminder that many young people are not in such a hurry as to dismiss or run over an older woman (a widow) who was having a little difficulty. Despite the opinions of some, the world still has a lot of good people who want to reflect the values of God.
Prayer: Lord, as I celebrate the gracious care of one young man, let me be mindful of my own life and your great calling to care for those in need. Amen.
