Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 2:11
On entering the house, they (the Magi) saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Thought for the Day: At the funeral of a friend, I quoted Louis L’Amour, the cowboy author, who said, “The trail is the thing, not the end of the trail. Travel too fast and you miss all you are traveling for.”  I think most of us have viewed the Magi’s (Wisemen) destination as this moment depicted in Matthew’s Gospel, but I would suggest that what we have here is only one stop along their journey – an important stop – but the journey continued into a world that was viewed very differently in light of the Magi’s experience with the child. As L’Amour put it, “There will come a time when you believe everything is finished; that will be the beginning.” As strange as it sounds, our faith teaches us that our destination is the journey.

Prayer: O God of Surprise and Wonder, lead us along the journey with a spiritual attentiveness that will appreciate all the goodness and blessings there are to experience.  Amen.
