Scripture: Psalm 6:9
The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord accepts my prayer.
Thought for the Day: In Sunday’s sermon notes, I mention the Jewish scholar, Abraham Joshua Heschel. He was a voice of wisdom and insight to people of many faith traditions, and in regard to prayer, he wrote in one of his essays:
“Prayer may not save us. But prayer may make us worthy of being saved.”
In no way was Heschel suggesting that the correct prayer or the proper attitude in prayer would somehow make us worthy in the eyes of God. Grace doesn’t work that way, yet prayer connects us to the Source of Grace. In doing so, we not only draw upon that gift but are transformed into people who become agents of that grace in the world. It is not us, but God working through us…as we are tethered to the Source through the act of prayer.
Prayer: May this moment connect me anew to you, O Gracious God, and in doing so, shape me more fully in the ways of Jesus. Amen.
