Scripture: Revelation 22:13
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.
Thought for the Day: I have been watching Bowl Games over the last couple of weeks, and so often the commentators have suggested that how a team finished the season would impact how the team would begin the season next year. There’s no question that the conclusion of one segment of life will influence the next segment of life, but I would like to suggest that how this year concluded for you does not necessarily need to control how next year will begin or be lived out. Of course, that assumes that you are choosing to connect yourself to the living God who is the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Though many things will begin and end within our sphere of life, we can be assured that all of it occurs within the larger realm of the One whose very existence stretches beyond the categories of start and finish and start again. Through the One who is Eternal, we find freedom from a life confined and controlled by the past. The Eternal Now (language from theologian Paul Tillich) brings the fullness of God into every moment of our lives, thus making for us opportunities that our found outside the usual categories of human life. This is going to be a great year!
Prayer: Today might be viewed as a new beginning for many, Lord, yet your eternal presence made real through the Holy Spirit is not restrained by the usual assumptions and categories. Provide me a vision of what it might look like to live with you in and through the Eternal Now. Amen.
