Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 2:11
On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Thought for the Day: When we go to visit the hospital or a home where a new baby has been born, we usually take a gift.  Some people take a fun little item like a cute rattle in the shape of an animal that goes around the baby’s ankle.  Other people are more practical in their gift giving, like diapers.  The wise men from the East brought gifts of great value, but they also were highly symbolic.  The gifts represented kingship, prophetic strength and humble sacrifice.  It is a very interesting combination of symbols, but Jesus often put together what appeared to be an peculiar combination only to create something marvelous.

Prayer: In all the gifts you give, Loving God, may I learn something new about you and the way you work in the world.  Amen.
