Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Roman 8:6
To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Thought for the Day: Flesh is evil and the spirit is good!  That’s often the over simplification of passages like this one, yet such interpretations have led to some rather unhealthy theologies and practices.  People have practiced flogging (self-flagellation) to beat down the ways of the flesh.  They have taught that sex was evil, even within marriage, which caused some faith communities to die off because couples stopped having sex.  The church has and continues to be an example of missing the point.  Our flesh is not bad.  In fact, the Hebrew tradition believed that God declared the human form to be good and beautiful.  Blaming the flesh for all that is bad is like blaming the beer bottle for alcoholism.  It is missing the point.  Like everything, the flesh has the potential for good or evil.  The spirit is what guides the body to its greatest potential.

Prayer: I give you praise, O God, for your love that inspires my hands and feet to do the work of grace.  Amen.
