Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 2:12
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the Magi left for their own country by another road.

Thought for the Day: Have you ever had a feeling, hunch, premonition or some other inclination that you were to do something uncharacteristic or unplanned? Has there been a time when you found out that the nudging and the decision to make the unplanned move was, in fact, a really bad move? Discerning and determining the nudging of the spirit as opposed to the nudging of our ego, fears or short-sidedness is often difficult. In what might appear to be a moment of clarity might just be our subconscious trying to find the easiest way out. For the sake of the Magi, I’m glad they accepted the warning they received instead of blaming the vision on some bad oysters. As followers of Jesus, there will be times when we feel pretty confident only to discover that our confidence was not of God. For this reason, we must be gracious to ourselves – otherwise we will cling to our own misguided ways, justifying them at everyone’s expense. Grace provides space for us to be reflective and honest with ourselves, and in doing so, letting go of what is not useful in hopes of catching what is.

Prayer: For your grace, O Lord, I am thankful. Allow it to be a tool in my reflection and discernment. Allow it to guide me – and when needed, to free me for the purpose of true discipleship. Amen.
