Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 130:1-6
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

Thought for the Day: In both the afternoon and evening classes on Embracing Forgiveness, we have engaged in wonderful conversations. The video presented some insightful ideas on the challenging work of forgiveness. During the video last night, I was reminded of Nelson Mandela (spent 27 years in a South African prison before becoming President of South Africa) who said:

As I walked out the door
toward the gate
that would lead to my freedom,
I knew if I didn’t leave
my bitterness and hatred behind,
I’d still be in prison.

It is good to have examples and models from which we can learn. If Nelson Mandela can leave behind what I would describe as legitimate bitterness and hate, then I ought to be able to set down and let go of some of the unhealthy baggage that I carry.

Prayer: With your help and through your teaching, O Merciful God, I desire a prison break – to truly leave behind the prisons that hold me – even the prisons of my own making. Amen.
