Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 1:16-17
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”

Thought for the Day: I always liked Steven Wrights’s deadpan humor.  With his slow and dry delivery, he said, “There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.” I can relate to that quote as I enjoy fishing, but never baited the hook because I never wanted to be bothered with the fish. I guess that makes me an idiot.

Jesus went fishing for the lives of human beings, and he and his disciples were quite successful. In today’s world, I wonder how good we are at living out the Jesus-metaphor of fishing.  Have we confused the act of fishing with simply standing on the shore? There are those who wonder why they see no results, yet they have no method or plan…in fact, they don’t even have a hook. Let’s not be accused of being idiots who do nothing more than stand on the shore.

Prayer: Let me be your agent in this world, O Lord, for there are many who would be blessed to know you and your love.  Draw me to that place where I can be helpful, but also give me both the passion and the enthusiasm needed to fulfill your calling upon my life. Amen.
