Scripture: Acts 4:32
Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common.
Thought for the Day: Albert Einstein said, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” I am pretty sure that Albert Einstein was speaking about global type events, but in reflecting on these words, I believe they also speak on a community level. Each day of life, there are dangers. They may not be threatening to our physical existence, but there are so many risks and hazards that surround us – surround our marriages, our families, our financial situations, our commitments, our convictions, etc. It is good to be in a community where the members of the community feel a genuine responsibility for one another. Acts speaks of the community holding everything in common, and though this included physical possessions (which tends to turn people off from this passage), I believe there is another important level in these words. Not to dismiss the sharing of possessions, but I truly believe that in God’s community there is a willingness among people to share in one another’s lives on more than a superficial level. It requires risk and time, but the harvest of that experiences is unspeakable for all involved.
Prayer: Lead me into a community, O Gracious God, for you intended us to find fulness of life in the act of community building. Amen.
