Scripture: Luke 9:2
…and Jesus sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
Thought for the Day: I must confess that I have been pretty bummed about the Lance Armstrong thing, and it is clear how devastating it has been to many people. With that said, maybe this will allow us to get some perspective on perspective. We just had 26 people killed at a school, 20 of them children; we continue to fight a war in Afghanistan; we see homelessness all around us, including a growing number of families and veterans; there are people around the globe dying from preventable diseases. So many horrible situations, and we as a nation are consumed by a guy who took some drugs so he could go a little faster on a bicycle. Really? Now I’m not suggesting I approve of what Mr. Armstrong did, but is our perspective a bit distorted? Jesus struggled to keep his disciples focused on what was important, and I would suggest the church continues this struggle. Just once I would like to see teachers receive million dollar endorsement deals because of their outstanding work in the classroom. Or how about a social worker mobbed by an autograph-seeking crowd all because of his brilliant work in getting homeless teens into permanent housing. It won’t be easy to change, but there are some real tragedies in our world and we need some perspective.
Prayer: God, send me out with a sense of your purpose, one of kindness and healing for all people. Amen.

Right on, Bruce! It will be big news for a couple of days until some other celebrity makes headlines . . . but those we should be concerned about will just keep doing their work to the best of their ability.
