Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 5:9-11
For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

Thought for the Day: During these weeks after the Baptism of Jesus, we turn to his early ministry including the call of his disciples.  I think it might take a little more than a good invitation to inspire me to leave behind my source of income and my network of supportive friends and family.  Yet for the disciples, it was an encounter with a man whose life seemed to exude something that was so attractive that they simply had to do so.  They may not have been able to articulate the why, but in time, their lives would also come to exude this same quality.  Theology (the study and discussion of God) is important, but even if we are unable to put our experience into language, that’s okay…assuming our lives exude that certain quality that was seen in Jesus.  And might I suggest that the unique quality might have been unconditional love?

Prayer: O Loving God, as you have given so generously to me, may I withhold nothing in my giving of self to the world.  Amen.
