Scripture: Proverbs 13:13
Those who despise the word bring destruction on themselves, but those who respect the commandment will be rewarded.
Thought for the Day: As I work on my study that begins this Wednesday evening (How To Read The Bible), I am reminded of Mark Twain who said, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.” Twain had a marvelous way of making you laugh while insulting you at the same time. In the study of scripture, many folks don’t take the time to even get their facts straight before they make grand pronouncements. Others who should know better, but who have a very specific agenda to uphold, simply rip scriptural phrases out of context to make a point that may in fact not be supported by scripture at all. The study of scripture is an art form, and it is one that most of us (I include myself in this) should approach very cautiously and respectfully. Don’t avoid scripture, but always look to the respected scholars for insight and support prior to making some profound judgment… otherwise you might find yourself backpedaling and apologizing at the same time. Trust me, I’ve been there.
Prayer: Lord God, there is so much beauty and wisdom found within the Bible. Don’t allow me to miss it because I was too busy trying to get what I wanted out of it. Amen.
