Scripture: Luke 7:36
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table.
Thought for the Day: We have often associated ‘Pharisees’ with evil or the standard of religious shallowness. At times, the Gospel writers give us that stereotype, but here we have an example of a Pharisee who desired to interact with Jesus. To invite someone into your home showed respect and a desire for engagement. We must remember that the Pharisees were an incredibly faithful tradition, and though some among them took their beliefs a bit too far, it remained a group of people who desired to know God. The worst among them became the defining characteristic for the entire group. I never want the worst among Christianity or clergy to define who I am, so we must try to view people as individuals and not bunch them together under a broad label. I think we can be thankful that Jesus doesn’t typecast us, but sees the best within us…and then draws it out of us.
Prayer: You have created me, O God, and you have placed your image upon me. As you see me through the eyes of grace, may I look at the people around me with the same perceptive care. Amen
