Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Deuteronomy 4:30-31
In your distress, when all these things have happened to you in time to come, you will return to the Lord your God and heed him.  Because the Lord your God is a merciful God, he will neither abandon you nor destroy you; he will not forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them.

Thought for the Day: When we have ventured down roads of unfaithfulness or allowed our priorities to be distorted by unhealthy or immoral powers, it is good to know we can return home.  It is hard to recognize our guilt, feel the sense of disgrace, to know real shame, offer confession, and to seek genuine change.  The first step toward renewed faithfulness would be made impossible if we knew God would only heap on a constant load of shame and  meet us with incessant criticism and reminders of our failed past.  Plenty of people treat the remorseful with ugliness and condemnation, and we wonder why there is a lack of change in the world.  But God meets us with mercy, this unmerited gift that desires to help facilitate the change.  Be assured that no matter what your past may look like, God remains a supportive partner in helping you return to true spiritual health.

Prayer: Amazing God, it is difficult to find the words needed to express gratitude for your amazing gift of mercy.  You welcome me, not a with barrage of insults that would only turn me away, but with open arms of support.  Thank you!  Amen.
