Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 10:28
Peter said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean…”

Thought for the Day: On this day, we remember the Mud March of 1907. This was a march for women’s suffrage that took place along the wet and cold streets of London. It caught the attention of people worldwide, specifically because of the diversity of women involved in the march. More than 3,000 women from every tier of society were involved. It is considered by many to be the pivotal point for women’s rights in England, and even across the ocean. Diversity not previously seen has an amazing ability to catch the attention of the world.

Originally, the Lord’s Supper caught the attention of outsiders by the unexpected – some might have even said shocking – diversity found at the table. People from different cultural and economic backgrounds, men and women, would sit together for a meal and to announce a common bond. Not only was it startling to some people, but it caused anger and violent pushback. There are people – even those who claim to be good Christians – who do not like the radical inclusion of the Kingdom presented by Jesus. That is part of the reason that the 11:00 hour on Sunday morning is still the most segregated hour of the week. The Jesus movement started with the total removal of divisive barriers, yet in many settings, this movement has become the architect and builder of more and more exclusionary walls. Today, let’s make sure the Lord’s Supper is set for all who might attend, and even making room for those who currently remain outside because of a wall that needs to be torn down.

Prayer: As you have brought me into your circle of love, O Lord, I must be thankful – for it is not because of anything I’ve done or will do. It is only because you made a choice to love me with the same love you extend to all. So again, thank you! Amen.
