Scripture: 1st Corinthians 3:23
…and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
Thought for the Day: Our legal system often uses the adage, “Possession is nine-tenthes of the law.” Some have asked, “What about the other tenth?” Interesting question, but maybe it misses the point. This well known legal phrase comes from an old Scottish expression “possession is eleven points in the law, and they say there are but twelve.” The law is attempting to show that without specific testimony, documentation or clear evidence, the one possessing the object will be awarded ownership. In the case of Christian thinking, possession is ten-tenths of the law, and God has possession of us. We may deny it, attempt to provide evidence to the contrary, but at the end of the day we belong to God, and that belonging is made evident in the life of Jesus. In a world where too many people claim ownership over others — physically, spiritually or emotionally — the Jesus story attempts to prove otherwise, and in the court of God’s grace where traditional mathematics don’t apply, it is in fact eleven-tenths of the whole person that belongs to God…more of us than we could ever imagine.
Prayer: I belong to you, O God of Heaven, for your grace has embraced me and claimed me as your own. May I live a life that exemplifies this glorious news. Amen.
