Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 31:24
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord.

Thought for the Day: I enjoyed reading Lord of the Rings when I was young, and one of my favorite characters was the Dwarf warrior, Gimli. There is a line in the movie, Fellowship of the Rings, in which a nearly impossible task is presented, and Gimli responded, “Certainty of death, no chance of success… What are we waiting for?” The story, of course, is a story of friendship and faithfulness to a quest. In the end, it was those who took courage and enthusiastically moved forward with the impossible who ended up doing what others thought had no chance. The life of radical love revealed in the life of Jesus is the ultimate act of courage, and though it may have appeared to be a hopeless story with certainty of death, it did not cause Jesus to even pause. Who among his followers is willing to show the same type of courage?

Prayer: O Lord of the cross and self-giving love, I give you thanks for all who have provided a witness to such grace through their acts of courage. Amen.
