Scripture: John 17:18
And Jesus said, “As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”
Thought for the Day: I invite you to reflect on these words from Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon (from their book, “Resident Aliens”), “The church exists today as resident aliens, an adventurous colony in a society of unbelief. As a society of unbelief, Western culture is devoid of a sense of journey, of adventure, because it lacks belief in much more than the cultivation of an ever-shrinking horizon of self-preservation and self-expression.” I would suggest that the church has chosen to follow the lead of Western culture instead of its calling to be an adventurous colony. How might this change? As we talked about in worship yesterday, what does it means to be salt and light in the world? How does the church need to get outside its building and live with a sense of adventurous journey?
Prayer: Kind and Loving God, you so willingly give of yourself by coming among us. Create in me an adventurous spirit that is willing to use your life-giving grace as a model. Amen.
