Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 4:18
We don’t focus on the things that can be seen but on the things that can’t be seen. The things that can be seen don’t last, but the things that can’t be seen are eternal.

Thought for the Day: In a world that gets bored with immediate gratification because it didn’t come yesterday, it is so important to recognize that the spiritual life achieves nothing in the short term. Thomas Merton wrote,

The only trouble is that in the spiritual life there are no tricks and no shortcuts. Those who imagine that they can discover spiritual gimmicks and put them to work for themselves usually ignores God’s will and grace.

Prayer and meditation can never be irregular and haphazard practices that expect much out of little. In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth, he spoke about focusing our attention on the things we can’t see. To some people that will sound like nonsense, yet for people of faith, our conversations and convictions are rooted in the unseen. And to experience such things even for a moment requires serious, lengthy and intentional work.

Prayer: Keep me going, Gracious God, even when I am not seeing what cannot be seen. Keep me moving forward and committed to the spiritual practices that allow this finite creature to touch the eternal. Amen.
