Scripture: 1st Samuel 16:10-11
Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
Thought for the Day: I am currently in Fort Worth for the annual Minister’s Week Conference at Brite Divinity School (campus of TCU). The preacher for the conference is Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale, and she had a wonderful sermon last night. In it, she asked the question: Did God know what he was getting when he called us? That’s a fascinating question, and my answer would be a strong YES. In giving a strong YES, more questions are raised, yet in the end, it all leads back to God’s amazing grace. And with that grace, God calls the flawed and the feeble, the confused and the conceded, the fearful and the foolish. In some of us, these characteristics are plentiful, and the fact that we’ve been called does not mean they disappear. God continues to work with and through our weak and distorted sense of self. God knows exactly what is being called and what will show up, and when we show up, we bring a lot of baggage. Yet in the divine mystery, God smiles and says, “This will work!”
Prayer: Wow! The moment I feel like a complete failure is when you say, “This is exactly what I was looking for!” Thank you for your willingness to work with my many flaws, and your ability to make a few of them a gift. Amen.
