Scripture: Jeremiah 22:3
The LORD proclaims: Do what is just and right; rescue the oppressed from the power of the oppressor. Don’t exploit or mistreat the refugee, the orphan, and the widow. Don’t spill the blood of the innocent in this place.
Thought for the Day: The following is from an article in 2014:
High school students, teens as young as 13 and other children reported missing by their families were among 16 juveniles rescued from forced prostitution during Super Bowl festivities in and around New Jersey, the FBI said Tuesday. Authorities arrested more than 45 pimps and their helpers, some of whom said they traveled to the New York region to traffic the women and juveniles…
There are similar articles from 2013, 2015, and just now, a few from this year. For those of us who live in the Houston area and will be part of hosting the 2017 Super Bowl, we have our purpose for the next 12 months. We’ll let politicians and big money people argue about the skyboxes at the stadium, the need for improved traffic flow around the venue, and other logistical tasks associated with hosting a big event. For the rest of us, we find it outrageous that billions of dollars will be spent in and around a big football game to make sure every little detail is covered, but will not spend an equal amount of money to protect children and make sure every child will be safe from traffickers. Over the next year, let us be a people who have our priorities right on this issue. Let us figure out a way to have the 2019 and 2020 articles talking about how the year Houston hosted the Super Bowl was the year things really begin to change – that was the year that a group of faithful people said, NO MORE! Because frankly, it is simply unconscionable that our sisters and brothers as young as eight or nine years old are being trafficked for sex.
Prayer: Forgive us, Mighty God, when our priorities are completely out of sync with yours. Forgive us and lead us into that place where we can make a true and transformative difference for children everywhere. Amen.
