Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st John 3:11
For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

Thought for the Day: On this Valentine’s Day, I am reminded of Thomas Merton who wrote:

Love is our true destiny.
We do not find the meaning of life
by ourselves alone –
we find it with another.

Merton was a Trappist Monk, and so this quote is not necessarily speaking of romantic love, dating or marriage.  His words point us to our purpose as human beings, a purpose found in receiving and sharing love. We were created to be in relationship with others, and however we describe these relationships – friend, spouse, parent, child, neighbor, co-worker, aunt, grandparent, sibling – they help us understand who God created us to be. I am better at being who I was created to be because of your decision to try to be who God created you to be.

Prayer: For all the people who have loved me and nurtured me, I give you thanks, O Lord who created us to exist in love. Amen.
